BSP files complaint against netizen who burned a P20 bill on TikTok

A TikTok user who broadcast a video burning a Php20 bill has been charged by the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas.

The uploaders were seen burning a Php20 bill to light a bottle of gin in the video. The video was pulled down by the original uploader before it was caught and reuploaded by other users, with the words “oo gin lang kame pero genuine” scribbled on it.

The user broke Presidential Decree No. 247, which prohibits “defacing, mutilating, ripping, or partially burning or destroying our cash by any means,” according to the central bank.

Those who break the law will be subject to a fine of not more than Php20,000 and/or a sentence of not more than five years in prison.

Banknotes and coins, according to BSP senior investigating officer Atty. Mark Fajardo, are the Republic of the Philippines’ property.

The original uploader allegedly received negative feedback from the public before removing it.

The original uploader has already been recognized by the BSP and the relevant authorities.

The central bank has also filed a complaint accusing the uploader of breaking the Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2022 and Article 154 of the Revised Penal Code, which prohibits unlawful assault.
