Google News Initiative invites Filipino students are invited to participate in a live fact-checking competition

The Google News Initiative (GNI) is inviting Filipino students to compete in a live fact-checking competition against other top Asian students.

The live-action University Verification Challenge is part of a year-long University Verification Workshops campaign aimed at educating students and raising awareness about how to spot misinformation in the Asia Pacific region.

Members of two or three-person teams will be challenged with intense quizzes that will put their fact-checking abilities to the test. Each team will have 15 minutes to complete each of the three challenges that will be broadcast live.

Each bracket’s winning team will advance to the finals, which will be held during Google’s annual Trusted Media Summit. This is for more experienced detectives who have mastered the fundamentals of fact-checking.

Students who complete the course will receive official certificates from DataLEADS, a GNI partner that trains and supports journalists in their fight against misinformation.

By September 23, 2021, students can register using this link. The challenges will be held in seven languages, including English, and will begin at 4:30 p.m. on September 25, 2021.

Google Philippines also shares its online newsgathering expertise with the Philippines’ top news organizations.
