Globe emphasized that it focuses on satellite services to reach rural areas where wired services have yet to be developed, as part of its commitment to providing connectivity to its customers nationwide.
“We see the satellite service as a promising deployment model that can reach the rural areas where there’s not much household density and will be challenging to roll out wired services,” said Darius Delgado, Globe Vice President and Head of Broadband Business.
The Ayala-led telco acknowledges some drawbacks since the overall cost structure of building satellite-based sites has not yet matured. To be financially viable and serve the masses, prices must be reduced, especially those currently unreachable by a fixed structure.
Globe At Home is aggressively exploring alternative technology and is negotiating with suppliers of future broadband technologies ranging from low-earth orbit satellites to conventional high-orbit satellites.
Other than alternative technologies, Globe At Home has been releasing more affordable programs and packages across its entire market range to assist low-income families.
Delgado agreed with Globe President and CEO Ernest Cu that pace isn’t the only factor in delivering a good customer experience regarding internet use.
“It’s really about having something relevant that we can serve up reliably to address customer needs,” Delgado added.
By the end of March 2021, the network expects to be “on schedule” and to have already surpassed its target network site builds, with a total of 318 new cell towers. By the end of the first quarter of this year, wireless expansion drives for both 4G LTE and 5G had resulted in a total of 4,210 sites.
