PLDT broadens its nationwide crackdown on illegal modem collection

PLDT Inc. advises customers to be vigilant against individuals posing as PLDT employees to steal modems for purported repair or replacement.

“We strongly encourage our customers to transact only with authorized PLDT personnel, especially inside their homes, and to always check for proper identification in case of doubt,” said Cathy Yang, first vice president at PLDT.

She stated that PLDT personnel would only collect modems from consumers after first replacing them.

“PLDT Group’s initiatives to ramp up asset protection efforts are part of a broader program to level up our customers’ experience on our network,” Yang continued.

Customers in Mindanao, particularly in Davao City, General Santos, Cotabato, and Zamboanga, have reported unidentified individuals professing to be PLDT employees entering their homes and removing their PLDT Fibr modems, prompting PLDT to issue this warning.

The telecommunications company activated its 164 hotlines where citizens can report similar incidents.

PLDT is also the driving force behind the National Telecommunications Security Council, an industry-wide, informal alliance for the mutual protection of the nation’s telecommunications infrastructure.

As of the end of 2022, the company’s fiber-to-the-home services reached more than 17.2 million households and 68 percent of the country’s cities and towns.
