House bill wants to rename Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) back to Manila International Airport (MIA)

Representative Ducielle Marie Cardema of the Duterte Youth party list has filed House Bill No. 10833, which proposes renaming the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) to Manila International Airport (MIA).

Cardema claimed in the bill’s explanatory note that the “name of the country’s international gateway should not have been politicized,” and that the country’s capital is Manila, therefore “the country’s international gateway to the world must be known as the MANILA INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT.”

According to Inquirer.net, acting presidential spokesperson Martin Andanar stated that the Republic Act No. 6639, which changed MIA to NAIA, must be repealed by Congress.

The Aquino administration adopted RA No. 6639 on December 10, 1987, rebranding MIA to NAIA. A petition to annul the aforementioned RA was filed in 2020, but the Supreme Court dismissed the petition.
