Instagram begins using video selfie for verification

Instagram has begun to employ video selfies to confirm user identity. Users discovered this update, which is now available in various regions of the world.

According to Meta, the owner of Instagram, video selfies uploaded by users will never be available on Instagram and will be erased after 30 days. It will also not gather biometric data or make use of the company’s facial recognition technologies. The video footage will just be used to inform the company’s AI systems that the user is, in fact, a genuine person.

Instagram has been working on video selfie verification for quite some time. This security check was implemented in August of 2020.

The feature is currently being launched for new accounts; existing accounts do not need to authenticate their identity via video selfies.
