YoY traffic growth in games and esports is expected to more than double, says Globe

Because of the pandemic, more people are playing games now than in previous years, increasing data demand and opening the door for Esports and new gaming content.

Nikko Acosta, SVP and Head of Content Business Group at Globe, stated that from a minor share of content traffic three years ago, Games and Esports have more than doubled in year-on-year traffic growth, which can be attributed to the availability of the proper device, a strong connection to internet services, and a vast portfolio of games to choose from today.

According to the company, League of Legends: Wild Rift has already reached 90 percent of its top-line monthly target due to the game’s wireless availability, which was previously unavailable.

Recently, Globe, in collaboration with Riot Games Southeast Asia, launched RiotGO promos that include data and premium features and items for the League of Legends: Wild Rift mobile game. In addition, the telco expanded its HomeSURF package and had LoL: Wild Rift, along with Mobile Legends, in the daily 1GB allowance.

“Just because you enjoy your hobby doesn’t mean it will vanish with the pandemic. The benefit of working online is that you can invest wisely as long as you have the time. And, because you’re at home, you can connect with your friends and community to play together,” Acosta explained.

“The last year and a half have provided us with an opportunity. We believed that with the right distribution, pricing, and infrastructure, the players would come, and they would not only come, but they would stay. And it’s something we’re proud of,” he added.

Even though the core experience is being physically present to share it with other players and supporters, Acosta believes Esports is resilient and easy to migrate online fully. Esports is also gradually making its way back into the current environment.

According to him, Globe has created a digital community that allows fans to watch the tournaments from the comfort of their own homes while also interacting with other viewers via chat.

“We do the same thing with zeal and tenacity to establish Esports, but we do it online. And we have the promise that when things open up with proper safety protocols, we will be able to include our offline events again. Esports is thriving because we can build a community online. And, eventually, it will be both digital and offline,” Acosta predicted.

Globe strongly supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly UN SDG 9, which emphasizes infrastructure and innovation as drivers of economic growth and development. Globe is committed to upholding the ten principles of the United Nations Global Compact.
