The TrashCash app, which is available on iOS and , was created by Filipino software developer Benjoe Vidal in an effort to encourage people to recycle and prevent plastic waste from polluting the environment. Plastic waste, among other things, is such a major source of pollution in the Philippines that even major online retailers are being urged to discontinue the use of single-use plastic packaging.
It’s simple to make a little extra money from your plastic waste. Simply open TrashCash, scan the trash you’re recycling, and you’ll be directed to the nearest collection center. You will then earn app points, which you can redeem for rewards such as groceries and food from the app’s partner retailers and restaurants.
TrashCash uses machine learning to determine what type of plastic you have. Its artificial intelligence-powered optical object recognition allows the app to identify the type of plastic material and educate the user on how to properly dispose of it.
