Microsoft stated at its Build 2021 event that the new iteration of Edge will be the “highest performing” browser available on Windows 10 when it releases later this week. Version 91, according to the company, includes new capabilities such as “startup boost and sleeping tabs,” which will put it ahead of Chrome and other browsers.
According to the post, Startup boost was introduced in March and works by “running a basic set of Microsoft Edge activities in the background.” At the same time, while Microsoft Edge browser windows are open, it is said to not utilize any more resources. According to the firm, this innovation has increased starting times by up to 41%.
Microsoft will introduce a “sleeping tabs” feature in the next build that will automatically put adverts to sleep when you navigate to another tab, allowing for “instance resource savings.” Because advertisements can be memory and processor-intensive, this should improve browser performance and free up RAM for other programs.
Microsoft moved to the Chromium browser engine in early 2020, and the previous EdgeHTML version was automatically deleted from Windows 10 last month. Microsoft claims to have contributed 5,300 commits to the Chromium project since the move, which benefit all Chromium-based browsers, including Chrome.
Chrome version 89 was launched in March, with a similar focus on memory savings and loading times. Chrome is utilizing 4.5GB of RAM with 25 tabs open, according to a cursory check. Microsoft and Google, hopefully, will continue to push each other to rectify the issue.
