Xiaomi-Leica partnership has been announced, Huawei cut ties with Leica

Xiaomi announced a strategic cooperation with Leica on Monday, and the first “imaging flagship” co-developed by the two firms will be released in July 2022.

“Xiaomi and Leica agree with each other’s goals and ideas and admire each other’s advantages and industry,” Xiaomi Group founder and CEO Lei Jun states in a joint news release.

Xiaomi’s imaging strategy, which includes optical design and ‘adjusting aesthetics orientations,’ will benefit from the collaboration, according to Jun.

“It is an honor to announce the long-term strategic cooperation with Xiaomi,” says Matthias Harsch, CEO of Leica Camera AG. Harsch claims that the alliance would usher in a “new era of mobile imaging,” with “excellent image quality, traditional Leica aesthetics, and unconstrained creativity.”

Meanwhile, Huawei, a former Leica partner, admits that “cooperation between our two companies terminated on 31 March,” according to an email response from a company official to Android Authority.

The last Leica-branded phones were the Huawei P50 series, which was released globally earlier this year.

While the US trade barrier had no effect on Huawei’s great image performance, it may have hurt sales, prompting Leica to look for new opportunities.

Huawei and Leica started working together in 2016 with the P9 series and Mate 9 lineup, and now they’re calling it quits. With Leica officially embracing their long-term cooperation, Xiaomi is redefining mobile imaging.
