The International 10 competition for Dota 2 has been moved to new country

After more than a year of delays, Dota 2’s forthcoming International 10 competition has been relocated to a new location in a new country. Valve said on Wednesday that the event, which was initially scheduled for Stockholm, Sweden, will now take place in Bucharest, Romania.

Valve began collaborating with Sweden on hosting the 2020 tournament a year in advance in 2019. As the summer-set event neared, it became evident that it would have to be postponed due to the coronavirus epidemic, which shifted the tournament from 2020 to 2021 – a fate shared by many other tournaments and events, including the Olympics the European Soccer Championships. The competition was eventually rescheduled for August 2021 following the postponement.

However, according to a Valve post last month, despite several assurances over the previous year, the Swedish Sports Federation voted not to accept esports into its federation, and Valve’s game was denied classification as an elite sporting event, preventing Visa applications for players from outside the European Union from being approved.

Rather than that, athletes’ admittance into the country would be up to individual border agent approval. This called into question teams’ ability to field their entire rosters and rendered it impossible to ensure the event’s integrity, therefore on June 21, Valve decided to postpone the tournament and relocate it.

Valve announced on Wednesday that The International 10 — Dota 2 Championships would be held at Bucharest’s Arena Nationala from October 7 to October 17. The tournament’s new venue can regularly accommodate up to 55,000 attendees. Still, it’s unclear how Valve will configure it for The International – though the company has stated that ticket information will be available soon.
