Smart leads in 5G network rollout and experience, delivering triple-digit growth in 5G users

Smart Communications, Inc. (Smart), the wireless arm of PLDT, expects a triple-digit increase in 5G customers in the next years as it continues to lead in the 5G sector by providing the fastest 5G speeds and the widest 5G network coverage in the Philippines.

This forecast is based on the rapid rise of Smart 5G users, who have now reached over 800,000, a 200 percent increase from the number of Smart 5G users in December 2020. In addition, Smart has produced a threefold increase in 5G data traffic in the first and second quarters of 2021.

This contributed to Smart having the most mobile data subscribers in the country (39.5 million as of end-June), resulting in a double-digit gain in mobile data revenues in the first half of 2021 compared to the same period last year.

“When it comes to 5G, the most critical considerations are speed and coverage.” This is why, since launching the Philippines’ first 5G commercial service last year, our focus has been on leading in both 5G speeds and 5G coverage in order to provide Filipinos with world-class customer experiences,” said Alfredo S. Panlilio, President and CEO of PLDT Inc. and Smart Communications.

Ookla, the global leader in internet testing and analysis, has named Smart the fastest and most dependable 5G mobile network in the Philippines for the first and second quarters of 2021, with median download and upload speeds that are twice as fast as its nearest competitor.

Smart has also installed over 4,400 5G stations in over 4,000 places, providing the country’s most extensive 5G network coverage.

Smart also put the Philippines on the 5G map earlier this month when it launched the first batch of its commercial 5G Standalone (SA) sites in Makati City, one of the world’s first 5G SA networks.

5G SA technology paves the way for new industrial applications by enabling super-fast response times and faster access to larger data rates, both of which are crucial in improving Internet of Things solutions for enterprises, health care, and smart cities.

“By owning the country’s fastest and largest 5G network today, Smart is in the ideal position to accelerate 5G adoption among Filipinos so that people can experience its game-changing benefits in productivity, business, and entertainment,” Panlilio added.

Aside from accelerating the rollout of its 5G network, Smart has also offered ground-breaking 5G services to tempt and move more data consumers to 5G. Smart announced Signature Plans+ earlier this month, the country’s first postpaid line-up with Unlimited 5G. In April, Smart also launched the country’s first Unli 5G internet deals for prepaid consumers.

Smart is also preparing to release more 5G gadgets, including the much-anticipated iPhone 13. These 5G devices, powered by Smart 5G, allow subscribers to experience next-level speeds for their online activities, such as sending large work or school files in seconds, making crystal-clear video calls and virtual meetings, seamlessly streaming ultra-HD movies, and playing high-bandwidth mobile games without lag.

Smart’s 5G network leadership also allows it to provide more content to customers through relevant services, such as the new GigaPlay app, which allows Smart subscribers to access well-curated live and on-demand entertainment and sports content that Filipinos enjoy, such as the NBA and PBA, as well as international and local concerts.
