Riot Games announces Valorant Mobile

Riot has announced the mobile release of Valorant, its tactical first-person shooter.

According to Anna Donlon, executive producer of Valorant, the shift to mobile began with a checklist of questions directed at the heart of Valorant to determine if it could be expanded to the mobile platform. It was indicated that they would not have proceeded if the checklist could not be completed. The purpose of this was to prevent Riot from releasing a compromised version of Valorant—rather than a port of Valorant PC.

“We didn’t begin by saying, ‘We’re going to build Valorant for mobile,’ we began by asking, ‘Can we develop Valorant for mobile?’ with a healthy dose of skepticism,” Donlon explained. “For us, whatever benefit you derive from playing Valorant on PC, you should derive from playing Valorant on mobile. However, we must acknowledge that the requirements of mobile players are distinct.”

Donlon highlighted that Riot has no plans to integrate mobile and PC games. Riot does intend to produce a console version of Valorant, but it will receive less attention than the mobile version.

“Intriguingly, I believe the switch to mobile has been slightly easier for us,” Donlon explained. Expressing that the console platform had challenges, particularly with the game’s competitive aspect, the team took it to mobile so simply.

Although the release date for Valorant’s mobile version has not been confirmed, Donlon stated that the community would see it within the next year or two.
