PLDT and Smart block 78k SIMs associated with smishing frauds

PLDT and Smart Communications have announced that they have blacklisted around 78,000 SIMs associated to smishing attacks in their ongoing efforts to combat cybercrime and protect consumers.

Smishing is the fraudulent practice of sending text messages posing as legitimate companies with links to “job offers,” which dupes the individual into providing personal information such as passwords or credit card information.

The worrying number of 78,000 blacklisted SIMs is claimed to have more than doubled since the same time period in 2021. They further alleged that the gang continues to disable 15,000 SIM cards per month because to smishing.

“We, at PLDT and Smart, have proactively blocked mobile numbers that have been involved in smishing activities. Once detected by our team, even in the absence of a complaint from our customers, we shut that mobile number out of our network. We continue to engage our customers, sharing with them useful tips on identifying malicious messages and protecting their personal data. We also work with relevant government offices, as well as law enforcement agencies, to effectively combat fraud and cybercrime,” – Angel Redoble, PLDT and Smart FVP and Chief Information Security Officer

PLDT and Smart have both committed over Php 3 billion in 2021 to improve their cybersecurity infrastructure in order to protect their subscribers from cyber-attacks and online fraud.

Since July 2021, both have blocked over 500 sites associated with smishing, as well as over 10,000 domains associated with phishing. They were also stated to have gathered over 200 million cyber threat intelligence pieces of information and stopped approximately 300 million different types of cyber attacks.
