LG has successfully demonstrated 6G data transmission over terahertz spectrum

LG Electronics Inc. announced on Thursday that it has successfully demonstrated 6G data transmission using the terahertz spectrum, as the South Korean tech behemoth attempts to forge ahead in next-generation communication technology.

In collaboration with Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, Europe’s leading application-oriented research organization, LG succeeded in sending 6G terahertz wireless communication signals 100 meters in an outdoor environment last week in Berlin.

LG stated that it collaborated with Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft to develop a new power amplifier capable of delivering stable communication signals in the 6G terahertz spectrum.

The ultrawide band spectrum has a limited frequency coverage range, and power losses in antenna transmitting and receiving processes are significant, necessitating the use of enhanced power amplifiers to address such issues.

LG claims that its new amplifier has a maximum output signal of 15 decibel milliwatts for stable communication in the 155-175 gigahertz band.

For the 6G terahertz wireless communication demonstration, LG also developed adaptive beamforming and high-gain antenna switching technologies.

LG anticipates that 6G communication will be commercially available in 2029, with standardization discussions beginning in 2025.

According to the company, the next-generation telecommunications network will be able to provide faster data speeds, lower latency, and higher reliability than 5G, as well as bring the concept of Ambient Internet of Everything (AIoE), which provides users with enhanced connected experiences.

LG established a 6G research center with KAIST in 2019 and last year signed an agreement to study 6G technologies with the Korea Research Institute of Standards and Science.

In June, the company’s principal researcher was elected chair of the Next G Alliance’s applications working group, a North American mobile technology alliance for the development of 6G solutions. (Yonhap)
