Google will provide 250,000 vaccines to the Philippines and other countries

Google.org has announced that it will fund vaccines for 250,000 people in several countries, including the Philippines, through Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, as part of Google’s ongoing commitment to vaccine equity.

Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, is a public-private partnership that works with the World Health Organization to lead the COVAX vaccine facility and ensure equitable vaccine access around the world. Bangladesh, Bhutan, Cambodia, Indonesia, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Vietnam, India, and Laos are among the other recipients.

“The presence of vaccines gives us hope that the pandemic may be nearing its end, but barriers to equitable access still exist, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. We hope that Google’s efforts and partnership with Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, will enable us to help more people in countries where vaccinations are required. We’re also committed to helping build public trust in vaccines by providing timely and reliable information on Search, YouTube, and the rest of our products and platforms, while also removing harmful and misleading content,” said Bernadette Nacario, Google Philippines Country Director.

In addition, Google will lead an employee giving the campaign to secure more vaccine shots, with the Gavi Matching Fund and Google.org matching the donation to triple the impact. This is in response to Gavi’s call for more funding to help more countries launched on April 15.

According to our World in Data’s scientific publication, the Philippines has already given over 1.7 million vaccine doses and fully vaccinated over 213,000 people.

As part of its ongoing efforts to provide accurate and reliable vaccine-related insights, Google.org will also provide technical assistance to Gavi to help accelerate global distribution. Google will also donate USD 250 million in ad grants to government and public health organizations, including the World Health Organization (WHO).

This equates to 2.5 million public service announcements aimed at a wider audience.

In the Philippines, Google, along with other tech companies, has joined the Department of Health’s #ChecktheFAQs campaign to combat vaccine misinformation and remove harmful and misleading content.
