President Rodrigo Roa Duterte has approved the Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases’ (IATF-EID) suggestion to lift the mandatory usage of face shields in regions with an Alert Level of one to three.
“Ang decision ko is aokay,” Duterte said in a pre-recorded speech, “tanggalin nyo rin yung shields.” He clarifies, however, that this will only apply to the shields, not the mask. He says the face mask would be used on a daily basis because the virus will be present in the Philippines for a long period.
“You must do what the government tells you to do because it is in the best interests of the country and you.” He said, “Sumunod lang kayo.”
Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea issued a memorandum on Monday outlining the voluntary use of face shields in areas where the COVID-19 alert level is reasonably low. The use of face shields in community settings will remain necessary in regions under Alert Level 5 and granular lockdowns, according to the memorandum.
Local government units and private enterprises in places with an Alert Level 4 are allowed discretion to keep or abolish the face shield policy. People living in areas with warning levels 3, 2, and 1 can utilize the face shields as an extra layer of protection.
