Converge ICT, SpaceX partnership not happening this year

ACCORDING TO ITS TOP OFFICIAL, Converge ICT Solutions Inc., a fiber internet provider, does not expect any significant progress this year toward its goal of signing a contract with Elon Musk’s Exploration Technologies Corp.

However, according to Converge ICT CEO Dennis Anthony Uy, progress on the relationship could be seen next year.

“We are not yet close with the agreement because I think they have priority in doing some American areas, Canadian… In Southeast Asia, I think maybe in a year, or a year and a half,” the executive said in a virtual briefing on Monday.

Technical studies for the collaboration are already underway in the city, according to Uy of Pampanga.

Converge ICT, for example, is investigating possible locations for uplink stations or a channel used for transmission to a satellite on a local level.

Converge ICT reported in a February 15 disclosure that satellite technologies, including those of SpaceX, are “among those emerging technologies being explored by Converge to carry high-speed broadband to remote areas of the world.”

Uy recognized the need to partner with another technology provider in the same press conference to penetrate the country’s difficult geographical features.

“To be able to complement the whole segment of the market is very important. For those that are not reachable by our network, this is the way. We need to partner with new technology, which can deliver high-speed, low latency [internet],” Uy said.

The group has raised its projected capital expenditures for 2021 to $20 billion. Some 30% of the investment would go toward Converge ICT’s backbone for its operations in Visayas and Mindanao; 50% would go toward access networks. The remaining 20% would go toward IT initiatives for digitalization.
