COMELEC extends voter registration from October 11 to October 30

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) will reopen voter registration from October 11 to 30, after lawmakers in the House and Senate forced it to grant their request for a deadline extension of September 30.

“Extension is from October 11 to 30; Monday-Friday, no Saturdays, except for the last day (October 30), 8 am to 5 pm. All registration services offered,” On Wednesday, September 29, Comelec spokesperson James Jimenez stated.

On Wednesday morning, the en banc unanimously adopted the resolution on the extension.

The election commission stated that it would not accept voter applications from October 1 to 8 so that election officials may focus their efforts on filing certificates of candidacy (COC).

Meanwhile, the registration period for abroad voters has been extended from October 1 to October 14.

“Note that for overseas voting, the filing of COCs is not an issue, thus the extension starts immediately,” Jimenez explained.

The poll authority, which earlier stated that it could only accommodate a one-week voter registration extension following COC filing, modified its position at the last minute after the legislative branch ordered it to do so.

Both chambers expedited the passage of a bill on the subject to get the proposal to President Rodrigo Duterte’s desk by September 30.

Senators even postponed the Comelec’s proposed 2022 budget, fulfilling the poll body’s promise to use election funds as bargaining leverage.

Jimenez had argued that the extension of voter registration was in response to public pressure, despite the fact that the Comelec had been steadfast in its refusal to do so even when pressure was rising in August.

In repeated public declarations, the poll body insisted on adhering to the initial deadline, citing operational issues. Many of its administrative preparations, such as the right allocation of official ballots and other paraphernalia, are reliant on the final number of voters.
