BIR reminded social media influencers of their tax duties

The Bureau of Internal Revenue released its tax note for social media influencers in a 10-page M.O. Circular No. 97-2021 after receiving several claims of significant income from various social media sites.

YouTubers, bloggers, and vloggers, among others, are included in the tax memo as “social media influencers,” which are classified as “any individual or company earning revenue in cash or kind through social media platform sites.”

The BIR is urging all social media influencers to submit tax returns and pay taxes in accordance with the memo Section 6: Tax Compliance under Paragraph C.

After online sellers and freelancers were required to register with the BIR in June 2020, bloggers and filmmakers were next in line, according to Revenue Memorandum Circular No. 60-2020, which states the Obligations of Persons Conducting Business Transactions Through Any Forms of Electronic Media and Notice to Unregistered Businesses, which was issued on June 10, 2020.

The Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) released a list of digital merchants who must register in their respective districts, and more than 120 revenue district officers (RDOs) across the country were ordered to issue the certificate of registration of digital sellers of goods and services within a day or two of receiving the application.

e-Commerce platform providers; internet retailers of consumer goods; digital service, membership, and subscription; digital transaction through the use of electronic platforms and media; online blogging, filmmakers earning from advertising gained through their online channels; and ride-hailing services for food, transportation, delivery, or merchandise are among the companies on the list.
