Microsoft stated in 2021 that Microsoft Edge would replace Internet Explorer as the default browser in Windows. Starting June 15, the Internet Explorer 11 desktop version will be retired and no longer be supported.
Internet Explorer was first released in 1995 and became widely used in the early 2000s, with a 95 percent usage share in 2003. However, with growing competition from Google Chrome and Firefox, which offer better user interfaces, faster speeds, and a better overall experience, Internet Explorer was unable to stay up.
Microsoft has gradually phased out support for it in 2016, when it stopped developing new features for it. By 2021, Microsoft will stop supporting apps like Microsoft 365 and Microsoft Teams.
