The new MediaTek Pentonic 2000 chipset, which will power next-generation flagship 8K TVs, has been formally announced.
The Pentonic 2000 is the world’s first commercial TV chip made with TSMC’s N7 (7nm-class) technology, and it offers unrivaled performance and power efficiency. Furthermore, for gaming PC hardware and the ninth generation of consoles, this processor supports 8K 120Hz screens and can even handle 144Hz.
Pentonic 2000 is also the first chip to include an 8K 120Hz MEMC engine. According to MediaTek, the chip’s built-in high-performance MediaTek APU (AI processor) drives MediaTek’s new 8K AI-Super Resolution technology. This technology dynamically upscales lower-resolution video to the native resolution of the display and improves image quality in real time.
The processor enables multiple picture-in-picture (PiP) or picture-by-picture (PbP) panels thanks to MediaTek’s Intelligent View technology, allowing a big 8K resolution display to showcase a display wall of numerous media sources.
According to MediaTek, the chip has the fastest CPU and GPU in the TV market and an ultra-wide memory bus and UFS 3.1. Furthermore, device makers can use MediaTek Wi-Fi 6E or even 5G cellular modems to give the fastest wireless internet connectivity for 8K streaming media or up to several streamed sources displayed at the same time.
The Pentonic 2000 is the first commercial 8K TV chip to support H.266 material using Versatile Video Coding (VVC). Furthermore, the Pentonic 2000 is compatible with Dolby’s most recent imaging and audio technologies, including Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos. The chip also supports AV1 for streaming services and all global TV broadcast standards, including ATSC 3.0.
The MediaTek Pentonic 2000 processor will be used to power next-generation top 8K TVs, which are slated to hit the market in 2022.
